USB Extension Cables
By Jessica Holbrook
USB devices have become extremely common in the last few years. Devices from computer mice to speakers and even external hard drivers use the Universal Serial Bus, or USB, technology. As these devices become more common, computer users have started running into the problem of USB cords not being long enough. That is where a USB extension cable comes in handy. A USB extension cable is a cable that a regular USB cable can plug into to extend the length of the cord. In essence, a USB extension cable is similar to the average extension cord. The problem, however, is that there are few things to take into consideration when purchasing a USB extension cable. First of all, you need to make sure the USB extension cable is compatible with your current USB device. Believe it or not, there are several different sizes of USB connectors and if you choose the wrong type, you won't be able to connect the extension cable. The most common connectors are: USB-A, USB-B, mini USB and micro USB. USB-A connectors are the most commonly used type of connector. They are long, flat rectangles and they can fit into any standard USB port. These connectors are used for computer mice, keyboards, external hard drivers, webcams and other commonly used computer devices. USB-B connectors are also very common. They are shaped like a square with 2 of its corners cut off. These connectors are most commonly used for printers. Finally, there are mini and micro USB connectors. These connectors come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. They are commonly used for small devices such as cell phones, digital cameras, and PDAs. Because cameras, cell phones, and PDAs are handheld devices, you will probably not need a USB extension cable for them. In addition, you need to make sure the USB extension cable is sufficient for your situation. If you need to extend the USB cable length by less than 16 feet, you can chain together several extension cables and the device will work. If you need to extend the USB cable length by more than 16 feet, however, you need to find a USB extension cable that contains a repeater. A repeater is a device that basically enhances the signal in the USB cable. It is possible to use a normal USB extension cable for lengths over 16 feet but it will likely lower the speed and quality of your USB device. Once you are sure that the USB extension cable is compatible with your USB cable and your situation, you're all set. You can move your USB devices off your desk to free up some much needed work space. You can buy a USB extension cable at any electronics or computer store. |

I am trying to imagine an application where anyone would need a USB cable longer than 16 feet.
